Bricklaying

Whether it is a garden wall, extension, brick or block, The Building Experience can show you the way!
Our bricklaying team will take you through the entire process from digging foundations to pointing or if you prefer we will concentrate on a specific area where your skills need reinforcement.
Foundations
You probably don’t need us to show you how to dig but we will certainly make sure the hole is deep enough. Sufficient foundations are critical for all walls and our team will work with you to make sure your wall has the best possible start in life. We aren’t afraid to get on the end of a shovel and we will make sure you learn to love it to. Remember; digging is good for the soul. Our flexible approach means if you would rather do all the groundwork yourself that is fine. Alternatively we can do the work without your involvement but you will be missing out on the fun.
The Bond and Setting Out
It is not quite as simple as putting bricks on top of each other. Setting out for a wall is of prime importance. There really is nothing more upsetting than building a lovely wall in the wrong place. We will explain the setting out process and the various techniques that can be used from the traditional string line to lasers. You will also learn the various brick bonds that can be used (Flemish, English garden wall etc) how they suit different locations and houses, and how the wall is set out according to your chosen bond.
The Cement Mixer
You will not spend the whole day mixing mortar but it is important to know the correct mix and consistency. The TBE team will do the bulk of the labouring so you can concentrate on gaining some bricklaying experience, although everyone has to pitch in and help where required.
Bricklaying
Time for the exciting bit. While our experienced bricklayer brings up the corners you will be given time to grow familiar with using a trowel to spread the mortar and lay bricks following a string line before trying the more difficult stages.
Pointing
The last stage of the process. For an amateur pointing represents the perfect opportunity to ruin all the hard work. Bricks smeared with cement are not a good look so out team will explain the basic pointing techniques so you will be left with a wall to be proud of.
