Lay an oak floor
The Building Experience wood floor course offers our customers the chance to learn to lay a beautiful floor in their own home.
There is no finer floor covering than a solid oak floor, and at TBE we would love to help you lay one in your own home. Many people are happy to lay a laminate floor from the local DIY store but consider a solid wood floor beyond their capability. But with our experience and structured teaching syllabus we can take you through the three stages of preparation, laying and finishing.
What do you learn
Each client gets a service based on their individual requirements but generally two of our team will be on hand to guide you through the process.
Preparation
The key element to any building project is the preparation. Whether you have a solid concrete or suspended timber floor we will make sure the sub-floor is ready and suitable for the oak floor. We can show you how to repair and level rotten Victorian floor joists, or how to use self-levelling compound on a concrete floor to bring it to within the necessary tolerances.
Laying
We will impart our hints and tips so you will soon be laying your own oak floor the professional way. Depending on the sub-floor, the fixing technique will be glue or nails. Likewise, the method of laying out the floor will vary with the type of floor. We will show you all you need to know about finishing the floor through doorways and the best ways of concealing the necessary expansion gaps around the perimeter.
Finishing
By now your knees should be really sore, but there is still one stage to go. Having laid a lovely floor, only the finishing product needs to be applied to give long-lasting protection and a beautiful look that will last for years. We have a favoured product and can show you samples and previous work so you will know exactly what to expect. We will show you how to apply the finish, and then how to care for your floor in the future. Then it is time to move the furniture in, sit back and marvel at what you have achieved.
